Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) has been a staple of traditional medicine for millennia. In Chinese folk practice, the dried root is boiled into a decoction to soothe sore throats and coughs; Li et al., 2019 report that local healers in Yunnan use 10 g of root steeped in 500 ml of water for 30 min, then drink the liquid twice daily. In Ayurvedic medicine, the root is macerated in warm milk to treat chronic bronchitis and skin inflammation; Sinha et al., 2020 describe a 5 g root mixed with 200 ml of milk, left to infuse for 20 min before consumption. European herbalists in the 18th‑century Germanic regions prepared a tincture of licorice bark to relieve digestive upset; Klein et al., 2018 note that 15 g of bark was soaked in 100 ml of 70 % ethanol for 48 h, yielding a sweet, aromatic liquid used as a mild laxative.

A simple, safe tea can be made at home: take 5 g of dried licorice root, add 250 ml of boiling water, cover, and let steep for 10 min. Strain and sip warm.
