Zanthoxylum bungeanum, commonly known as Sichuan pepper, has a long history of use in East Asian folk medicine. In traditional Chinese medicine, the dried fruit is brewed as a mild tea to relieve abdominal pain, indigestion, and to stimulate appetite (Li et al., 2018). The bark and leaves are also decocted to treat coughs, sore throats, and to alleviate menstrual cramps (Zhang & Liu, 2015). In Korean traditional practice, a decoction of the fruit and bark is used as a poultice for skin inflammation and as a topical rinse for ear infections (Kim et al., 2020). Vietnamese healers prepare a maceration of the fruit in alcohol to treat fevers and as a mild analgesic for toothaches (Nguyen et al., 2019). Across these cultures, the common theme is the use of infusions or decoctions of the fruit, bark, or leaves to address digestive, respiratory, and inflammatory ailments.

A simple, safe recipe for a Sichuan pepper tea is as follows: combine 5 g of dried fruit with 200 ml of boiling water. Let the mixture steep for 5 minutes, then strain and sip slowly. This preparation delivers a gentle numbing sensation that can soothe an upset stomach or relieve mild pain. The tea is generally well tolerated, but it should be avoided by pregnant women and individuals with a history of gastrointestinal sensitivity, as high doses of the alkylamides can cause mild nausea or abdominal discomfort.

The therapeutic effects of Zanthoxylum bungeanum are largely attributed to its alkylamides, particularly sanshools (α‑sanshool, β‑sanshool), which are responsible for the characteristic tingling and analgesic properties. The plant also contains flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol, as well as essential oils rich in monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes that contribute to its anti‑inflammatory and antimicrobial activities. These constituents have been isolated and quantified in several phytochemical studies, providing a clear biochemical basis for the traditional uses described above.
