Mangifera indica, the common mango, has a long history of use in traditional medicine across tropical regions. In Ayurvedic practice in India, dried mango leaves are steeped to make a mild tea that is taken to reduce fever, relieve cough, and promote diuresis; this use is documented in Sharma and Singh, 2018. In West Africa, the Yoruba people prepare a decoction of mango bark to treat skin infections and wounds, applying the warm liquid as a poultice; Okoro et al., 2019 report this practice. In Southeast Asia, the Kachin of Myanmar brew a leaf infusion to alleviate stomach upset and diarrhea, and they also macerate fresh mango peel in water to create a decoction used as a mild laxative; Hlaing et al., 2020 describe these preparations. Across these cultures, the common theme is the use of leaf or bark infusions and decoctions to address fever, respiratory complaints, gastrointestinal disturbances, and skin conditions.

A simple, safe recipe for a mango leaf tea is as follows: take 5 g of dried mango leaves (about one tablespoon), place them in a cup, pour 250 ml of freshly boiled water over the leaves, cover, and let steep for 10 minutes. Strain the liquid and drink one cup twice daily. This preparation is suitable for most adults; however, pregnant women should limit intake to one cup per day because high doses of mango leaf constituents may stimulate uterine contractions. As with any herbal remedy, individuals with known allergies to Anacardiaceae should exercise caution.

The therapeutic effects of mango leaf and bark preparations are largely attributed to well‑established phytochemicals. Mangiferin, a xanthone glucoside, is abundant in the leaves and has potent antioxidant and anti‑inflammatory activity. Quercetin and catechins, flavonoids present in both leaves and bark, contribute to antimicrobial and antipyretic properties. Gallic acid, another phenolic compound, is also found in the bark and supports wound‑healing activity. These constituents provide a biochemical basis for the traditional uses described above.

Modern research continues to explore the health benefits of mango leaf extracts. Recent in‑vitro studies have confirmed anti‑diabetic, anti‑obesity, and anti‑viral activities, and a few clinical trials are underway to evaluate its efficacy in managing metabolic syndrome. Commercially, standardized mango leaf extracts are available as dietary supplements, and the plant remains an integral part of folk medicine in many tropical communities.

Fresh mango fruit is consumed raw, in fruit salads, desserts, smoothies, and as a flavoring ingredient in confectionery, ice cream, yogurt, and beverages. Mango pulp and puree are used in processed foods, fruit preserves, fruit juices, and ready‑to‑eat products. Mango seed kernel oil, extracted from the seed kernel, is used as an edible oil for frying, baking, and salad dressings, and as a cosmetic ingredient in soaps, lotions, and skin‑care products due to its high oleic acid content.

Industrial and craft applications:
Mango wood, a dense hardwood with 30–35 % lignin, is used for furniture, flooring, carving, decorative panels, and musical‑instrument components. Its durability and resistance to decay make it suitable for outdoor applications. Mango wood is also processed into charcoal and charcoal briquettes for cooking and heating.

Food and beverages (non‑medicinal):
Mango fruit is processed into fruit juice, smoothies, fruit preserves, chutneys, candies, and flavored drinks. Mango pulp and puree serve as flavoring agents and texturizers in ice cream, yogurt, and confectionery. Mango seed kernel oil is used as a cooking oil and as a base for sauces and dressings.

Colorants and tanning:
Extracts from mango peel and pulp contain natural pigments (anthocyanins and carotenoids) used as food colorants and, in limited applications, as natural dyes for textiles and cosmetics.

Wood and fiber:
Mango wood’s high density (0.8–0.9 g cm⁻³) and fine grain make it suitable for high‑quality flooring, furniture, and decorative items. Its lignin content contributes to resistance to fungal decay, extending product life.

Fragrance and cosmetics:
Mango seed kernel oil, rich in oleic acid and antioxidants, is used in soaps, lotions, and skin‑care formulations. Its mild fragrance and emollient properties make it a popular cosmetic ingredient.

Properties relevant to use:
Mango seed kernel oil has a low iodine value (~30 g I₂ 100 g⁻¹) and high oleic acid (~70 %), making it stable for high‑temperature cooking and suitable for cosmetic emulsions. Mango wood’s lignin content and density provide mechanical strength and durability for structural and decorative applications. Mango fruit’s high sugar content and natural pigments enable its use as flavoring and coloring agents.

Standards and regulation:
Edible mango products are regulated by Codex Alimentarius, FDA, and EU food safety standards. Mango seed oil used in food must meet FDA and EU food‑grade specifications. Cosmetic use of mango seed oil is governed by the EU Cosmetics Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009. Mango wood used for furniture and flooring must comply with FSC certification and relevant EN standards (EN 16344, EN 16345). Charcoal derived from mango wood follows ISO 19020.

Sustainability and sourcing:
Mango cultivation is widespread in tropical and subtropical regions, and mango wood is often a by‑product of fruit production, harvested from fallen trees or trees felled for fruit. Sustainable sourcing of mango wood can be achieved through FSC certification. Mango seed oil is derived from the seed kernel, a by‑product of fruit processing, reducing waste and promoting circularity in mango supply chains.
