Sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) has long been a staple of folk medicine in many temperate regions. In traditional Chinese medicine the dried fruit is brewed as a mild tea or decoction to relieve cough, sore throat, and to boost the immune system (Zhang et al., 2018). Among the Mongolian nomads, dried berries are steeped in hot water to produce a fragrant infusion that is used to treat fever, digestive upset, and to strengthen the stomach lining (B. T. B., 2014). In the Russian Far East, the bark of the young shoots is macerated in alcohol to create a tincture that is applied topically as a poultice for skin wounds, burns, and rheumatic pain (Ivanov, 2013). Scandinavian herbalists have also recorded the use of a leaf tea to soothe colds and to support liver function, citing the work of K. L. S. in the 1990s (K. L. S., 1995).

A simple, safe recipe for a sea buckthorn leaf tea is as follows: combine 5 g of dried leaves with 250 ml of freshly boiled water. Let the mixture steep for 10 minutes, then strain and sip slowly. The tea can be taken up to three times daily, but pregnant women should avoid it until more safety data are available, and individuals with a history of gastrointestinal sensitivity should start with a single cup to gauge tolerance. For a stronger, more concentrated preparation, a 1:5 (w/v) ethanol tincture can be made by soaking 30 g of dried fruit in 150 ml of 70 % alcohol for 4 weeks, shaking daily, and filtering before use. This tincture is traditionally diluted 1:10 in water before consumption and is considered safe for most adults when used in moderation.

The therapeutic effects of sea buckthorn are largely attributed to its rich phytochemical profile. The fruit is exceptionally high in vitamin C (up to 200 mg g⁻¹), vitamin E, and a range of carotenoids such as β‑carotene and lutein. Flavonoids—including quercetin, kaempferol, and their glycosides—contribute antioxidant activity, while the unique omega‑7 fatty acid, palmitoleic acid, is thought to support skin health and reduce inflammation. These constituents provide a biochemical basis for the plant’s traditional use in treating respiratory ailments, skin conditions, and digestive disorders.

Modern research continues to validate many of these folk practices. Recent clinical trials have shown that sea buckthorn extract can improve lipid profiles, reduce oxidative stress, and support wound healing, leading to its inclusion in a range of nutraceuticals and topical formulations. The plant remains widely cultivated in Europe and Asia, and its berries, leaves, and bark are now available as dried powders, teas, and tinctures in health food stores worldwide.
