Murraya paniculata, commonly called orange jasmine, has a long history of use as an herbal infusion and topical preparation in several tropical cultures. In the Ayurvedic tradition of India, the dried leaves are boiled to make a decoction that is drunk to relieve cough and asthma; Bhat et al., 2015 report that the leaves are also macerated in alcohol to produce a tincture used for fever and as a mild diuretic. In traditional Chinese medicine, the bark is steeped in hot water to produce a decoction that is taken for digestive upset and to reduce inflammation; Li et al., 2017 describe the bark decoction as a remedy for abdominal pain and diarrhea. In the Philippines, the leaves are used in a poultice for skin infections and wounds; Santos et al., 2019 document that the leaf paste is applied to cuts and bruises to promote healing and reduce bacterial growth.
A simple, safe tea can be prepared from the leaves. Take 5 g of dried Murraya paniculata leaves and add them to 250 ml of freshly boiled water. Let the mixture steep for 10 minutes, then strain and drink two cups per day. This mild infusion is suitable for most adults, but pregnant women should avoid it because the plant contains alkaloids that may stimulate uterine contractions. As with any herbal remedy, it is wise to consult a healthcare professional before long‑term use.
The therapeutic effects of Murraya paniculata are largely attributed to its well‑characterized phytochemicals. The leaves and bark contain alkaloids such as murrayanine and naringin, which have been shown to possess anti‑inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Flavonoids, including quercetin and kaempferol, contribute to the plant’s antioxidant activity, while essential oils rich in limonene and linalool provide soothing effects on the respiratory tract.
