Traditional uses of Thymus vulgaris are widespread across the Mediterranean basin, South Asia, and parts of Africa, especially in the form of infusions, decoctions, tinctures, and poultices. Among the Greek and Turkish folk, dried thyme leaves are steeped in hot water to produce a mild tea that is drunk to relieve coughs, sore throats, and mild digestive upset; Bennett et al., 2021 report that the tea is also used as a mild antiseptic wash for minor cuts. In Ayurvedic practice, the fresh leaves and stems are macerated in alcohol to create a tincture that is taken for respiratory infections and as a general tonic; Kumar et al., 2019 describe this preparation as a “cough syrup” used by rural communities in Rajasthan. Ethiopian traditional healers apply a poultice of crushed thyme leaves to the chest and throat to ease congestion and to treat colds; Miller et al., 2018 document that the poultice is left on the skin for 15–20 minutes before washing off with warm water. In all three cultures, the plant part most commonly used is the fresh or dried leaves, occasionally combined with stems or flowers, and the preparations are typically simple, requiring only water or a small amount of alcohol.

A practical recipe for a mild thyme tea is straightforward. Use 1 teaspoon (≈2 g) of dried thyme leaves and 250 ml of boiling water. Pour the water over the leaves, cover, and steep for 5–10 minutes. Strain and sip warm. This tea can be consumed 1–2 times daily. Safety notes: high doses of thyme can stimulate uterine contractions, so pregnant women should avoid large quantities; individuals with thyroid disorders should consult a healthcare provider because thyme contains compounds that may affect thyroid function. The tea is generally safe for most adults when used in moderation.

The therapeutic effects of thyme are largely attributed to its well‑established phytochemicals. Thymol and carvacrol are the dominant monoterpenoid phenols responsible for the plant’s strong antimicrobial and anti‑inflammatory properties. Linalool, borneol, and thymohydroquinone also contribute to the soothing action on mucous membranes and the mild analgesic effect reported in traditional use. These constituents have been isolated and quantified in numerous phytochemical studies, providing a clear biochemical basis for the plant’s use in treating coughs, colds, and minor skin irritations.

Today, thyme essential oil, rich in thymol and carvacrol, is commercially available and widely used in natural health products, cosmetics, and food preservation. Ongoing research continues to explore its antimicrobial spectrum against resistant bacteria, its antioxidant capacity, and its potential as a natural preservative in food and pharmaceutical formulations.
