Genus Pterostylis in Family Orchidaceae
In botanical taxonomy, a genus (plural genera) is a rank used to group closely related species within a family. In the hierarchy, genus sits below family and above species.
Genera are defined by shared morphological, anatomical, and genetic characteristics (for example, features of flowers, fruits, seeds, or leaves) that indicate a close evolutionary relationship among the species they contain.
Each genus can include one or more species. Examples include Rosa (roses) and Solanum (nightshades, including tomato and eggplant).

Genus Description
Suggest a correction!Pterostylis (R.Br.) belongs to Orchidaceae and comprises ground orchids distributed from Australia through New Zealand to New Caledonia and Lord Howe Island, extending into New Guinea. The genus includes roughly 240 species, most diverse in temperate southeastern Australia, with representatives in arid inland habitats and cool to alpine zones; the type species is Pterostylis nutans R.Br. POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024.
Diagnostic morphology emphasizes terrestrial, mostly tuberous plants with a basal rosette of ovate to lanceolate leaves; the erect flowering stem bears reduced, sheathing cauline leaves and usually one to few flowers. The flowers are often green and white, non-resupinate, and have a distinctive hood formed by the dorsal sepal and petals; the lateral sepals are fused into a saccate structure that is often beaked or flared, producing a narrow gaped labellum that is variably pubescent. The short column bears an apical anther and usually two pollinia; the lip apex is often incurved and sometimes bears a hinge-like movement (“trigger” lip) that expels pollen onto visiting insects, reflecting specialization for pollination by fungus gnats and other small flies in several lineages. The ovary is inferior, placentation is parietal, and fruits are dehiscent capsules with dustlike seeds adapted for wind dispersal. POWO, 2024; Jones & Clements, 1989.
Diversity is centered in southeastern Australia, with regional endemics in Tasmania, southwestern Western Australia, the Australian Alps, and in New Zealand; several species occur in montane forests and heaths, while others inhabit open grasslands and shrublands to alpine elevations. Patterns reflect multiple radiations linked to floral specialization, notably in groups with mobile lips. The base chromosome number is x = 12 in the tribe Cranichideae, and has been reported for several Pterostylis lineages (Chase et al., 2015).
Taxonomically, most Australian species are maintained in Pterostylis sensu stricto following the major revision of Jones & Clements (1989). Subsequent treatments recognized multiple subgenera (e.g., Pterostylis subg. Pterostylis, subg. Blepharochilum, subg. Hymenochilus; Jones & Clements, 1994, 2001), while segregating the “Philochloron” group as Diplocaulobium (W. Jones) M.A. Clem. & D.L. Jones, 2005. In east and southeast Asia, a large complex formerly placed in Pterostylis was transferred to Oligochaetochilus (Szlach.) S. Engels, Chase & M.W. Chase, 2005, now widely adopted for those taxa; uncertainties remain in delimitation where sequence data are limited (Jones & Clements, 2005; Jones et al., 2006; Chase et al., 2015). Alternative concepts that segregate Bunochilus and Crang orchis have been proposed (D.L. Jones & M.A. Clem., 2006) but are not consistently followed in current global checklists (POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024).
Humans value Pterostylis primarily as ornamentals and in horticultural trade, with many species prized for delicate green-white flowers and ecological interest; some taxa are cultivated in specialist collections and former Bunochilus species are traded under horticultural names. The group has minor weed occurrence but is not broadly invasive, and no widely documented medicinal uses are established.
Conservation concerns arise from habitat loss, fragmentation, and altered fire regimes; several region-specific taxa are classified as threatened. Key research gaps include refined species limits where cryptic diversity is suspected, and updated conservation assessments aligned with changing taxonomy. Jones & Clements, 1989; Chase et al., 2015; POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024.
