Pterostylis splendens is a unique plant belonging to the orchid family and is only found in New Caledonia. It was first identified in 1998 by David Jones and Mark Alwin Clements, based on a specimen grown in the Australian National Botanic Gardens from material collected in New Caledonia. This orchid, also known as the greenhood orchid, thrives in moist forest and maquis environments, specifically on soils with high levels of ultramafic minerals, at elevations between 700 to 1,300 meters.
