Pterostylis maxima, also known as the large rustyhood, is a terrestrial orchid found in south-eastern Australia. It has a rosette of leaves at its base and up to eight dark brown flowers with transparent "windows" and a thin, dark insect-like labellum. The plant is perennial and has an underground tuber. It grows in woodland, open forest, and mallee habitats. Pterostylis maxima was first described in 1989 and its specific epithet means "greatest" or "largest" in Latin. It is considered vulnerable in Victoria and endangered in South Australia. Flowering occurs from October to November.
