Pterostylis extranea is a unique plant belonging to the orchid family Orchidaceae and is found only in the state of Queensland. It was first identified and named as Oligochaetochilus extraneus by David Jones in 2010, based on a specimen grown in the Australian National Botanic Gardens from a tuber collected near Eungella Dam. However, in the same year, Jasmine Janes and Marco Duretto changed its name to Pterostylis extranea. The name extranea comes from the Latin word meaning "strange".
