Pterostylis mirabilis, also known as the nodding rufous-hood, is a unique orchid endemic to South Australia. It has a rosette of leaves at its base and up to ten greenish-white flowers with a narrow hood, down-turned lateral sepals and a thin-textured, insect-like labellum. This perennial herb is found in rocky, hilly areas under Melaleuca uncinata scrub and is only known to grow in about twelve locations on the Eyre Peninsula. Due to habitat fragmentation, weed invasion, and other threats, Pterostylis mirabilis is listed as a vulnerable species under the Australian Government Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. Its specific epithet, mirabilis, meaning "wonderful" or "strange," aptly describes this unique and fascinating orchid.
