It is found at altitudes between 1,200 and 2,200 m (3,900 and 7,200 ft) in areas with high rainfall and snow cover. It is often found growing in areas with high levels of disturbance, such as ski runs and walking tracks.
Pterostylis crassicaulis, also known as the alpine swan greenhood, is a plant in the orchid family that is native to south-eastern Australia. It has a rosette of dark green leaves and produces up to 18 bluish-green and white flowers with dark green stripes. These flowers have a unique labellum with a dark green, beak-like appendage. This plant is similar to another species, P. cycnocephala, but is more robust and grows at higher altitudes. It is a perennial herb with an underground tuber and blooms from December to January. The alpine swan greenhood was first described in 2008 and was later renamed in 2010. It is found in alpine and subalpine grasslands and herbfields in eastern Victoria and on the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales, typically in areas with high levels of disturbance.
