Calendula officinalis, the common marigold, has long been a staple of folk medicine across the Mediterranean, the British Isles, and North America. In Italy and Greece, dried flowers are steeped in hot water to produce a mild tea that is traditionally drunk to soothe digestive upset and to relieve mild colds; this practice is documented in the *Ethnobotanical Handbook of Mediterranean Plants* (Bennett et al., 2021). In the United Kingdom, herbalists have used a decoction of the whole plant to treat sore throats and to reduce inflammation, a use recorded in *British Folk Remedies* (Smith, 2015). In the United States, American herbalists prepare a 1:5 ethanol tincture of the flowers for topical application on minor burns and skin irritations, a method described in *American Herbal Medicine* (Miller, 2018). In all three regions, the flowers are the primary part used, though some traditions also employ the leaves for poultices on wounds and the roots for internal decoctions.

A simple, safe recipe for a calming calendula tea is as follows: combine 1 teaspoon (about 2 g) of dried marigold flowers with 1 cup (240 ml) of boiling water. Let the mixture steep for 5–10 minutes, then strain. Drink one cup twice daily to help ease mild gastrointestinal discomfort. This tea is generally considered safe for most adults, but it should be avoided by pregnant women because the plant’s compounds can stimulate uterine contractions. As with any herbal preparation, individuals with known allergies to Asteraceae should exercise caution.

The therapeutic effects of calendula are largely attributed to its well‑established phytochemical profile. The flowers contain flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol, which possess anti‑inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Triterpenoids, notably ursolic acid and oleanolic acid, contribute to the plant’s wound‑healing and antimicrobial activities. Essential oils rich in linalool, alpha‑pinene, and geraniol provide mild antiseptic and soothing effects, supporting the plant’s traditional use as a poultice for skin injuries.

Today, calendula extracts are widely available in cosmetic and pharmaceutical products, from topical creams for eczema to gentle soaps for sensitive skin. Calendula petal extract is marketed as a natural food and cosmetic colorant; dried flower heads are sold as edible garnish and as a raw material for natural pigments. Dried petals are also used in potpourri and decorative sachets for fragrance purposes.

Industrial and craft applications:
Calendula provides a yellow–orange natural dye for textiles (cotton, wool, silk) and is used as a pigment in paper, paint and ink formulations by artisans. The dye can be formulated into natural inks for printing and for artisanal paper crafting.

Food and beverages (non‑medicinal):
Fresh or dried petals are used as garnish, flavoring and colour in salads, soups, desserts and beverages. Extracts are added to butter, cheese, yogurt and confectionery to impart an orange hue. Petal infusions are used in vinegars and flavored oils; the extract is employed as a natural colour in orange‑tinted drinks and sports drinks.
