Catharanthus roseus, also known as bright eyes, Cape periwinkle, or Madagascar periwinkle, is a perennial flowering plant native to Madagascar. It is grown in other parts of the world as an ornamental and medicinal plant. It is a source of the drugs vincristine and vinblastine, used to treat cancer. This plant has many different names, including graveyard plant and old maid. It has oval, glossy green leaves and flowers that range in color from white to dark pink. In the wild, it is endangered due to habitat destruction, but it is widely cultivated and naturalized in subtropical and tropical areas. It is popular for its hardiness and long flowering period, and there are many different cultivars with varying flower colors. C. roseus has a long history of use in traditional medicine, and its extracts have been used to treat various diseases. It has also been studied for its potential in cancer treatment, and efforts are being made to increase the production of its beneficial alkaloids. However, it is important to note that all parts of this plant are poisonous if consumed orally.
