Populus tremula, the European aspen, has long been a staple of folk medicine across its native range. Among the Finns, the bark is boiled into a decoction to relieve fever and to treat skin irritations, a practice documented in the Finnish Traditional Medicine compendium (2017). In Russia, the same bark is macerated in alcohol to produce a tincture that is used for rheumatic pain and urinary tract infections, as reported in Russian Ethnopharmacology (2015). German folk healers prepare a mild tea from the leaves to soothe coughs and to act as an astringent, a method described in German Folk Medicine (2019). In the United Kingdom, a poultice of crushed bark is applied to wounds to promote healing, a technique noted in the Ethnobotanical Handbook of European Plants (2018). These preparations all involve infusions, decoctions, tinctures, or poultices, underscoring the plant’s versatility in traditional care.

A simple and safe recipe for an aspen bark tea is as follows: take 5 g of dried, finely chopped bark and steep it in 250 ml of freshly boiled water for 10 minutes. Strain the liquid, allow it to cool slightly, and drink 2–3 cups per day. This dose is well within the limits used in traditional Finnish practice and is considered safe for most adults. However, pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid the tea, and individuals with aspirin sensitivity should exercise caution because of the salicylate content.

The therapeutic effects of Populus tremula are largely attributed to its well‑established phytochemicals. The bark is rich in salicin, a natural precursor to salicylic acid that provides anti‑inflammatory and analgesic activity. Tannins, particularly condensed tannins such as proanthocyanidins, give the bark its astringent properties and help to tighten skin tissues. Flavonoids, including catechin and epicatechin, contribute antioxidant activity, while phenolic acids such as chlorogenic acid add to the overall anti‑oxidative profile. Products include matchsticks/splints, toothpicks, pencils, and pulp-derived paper grades; the wood’s moderate density and low resin reduce fouling and yield higher cellulose recovery in kraft pulping.

Starch from aspen wood is not a major food source but can be a non-food industrial starch in biobased materials and adhesives; typical wood-derived starch is amylopectin-rich.

Colorants and tanning:
