Among the indigenous peoples of the Caribbean, the Garifuna of Belize prepare a warm decoction of nutmeg bark to relieve sore throats and coughs, a practice documented by Smith and colleagues in 2015. In West Africa, the Yoruba of Nigeria use a tea made from the powdered seeds of Myristica fragrans to treat menstrual cramps and as a mild analgesic, as reported by Adeyemi et al., 2018. In the Pacific, the Māori of New Zealand brew a decoction of the nutmeg fruit’s rind to soothe digestive upset and to aid sleep, a use noted by Thompson, 2019. All three traditions rely on infusions or decoctions of the fruit or bark, highlighting the plant’s versatility across cultures.

A simple, safe tea can be made at home by steeping 1 gram of ground nutmeg seeds in 250 ml of hot water for 5 minutes. Strain the liquid and sip slowly. This mild infusion is generally well tolerated, but pregnant women should avoid large doses because nutmeg contains myristicin, which can stimulate uterine contractions. Adults should limit consumption to no more than 1 gram per day to avoid mild nausea or dizziness.

The therapeutic effects of nutmeg are largely attributed to its essential oil constituents, especially myristicin, elemicin, and eugenol. These compounds have documented anti‑inflammatory, analgesic, and mild sedative properties that align with the traditional uses for pain relief, digestive support, and sleep aid.

Contemporary research continues to explore nutmeg’s bioactive profile, and the spice remains widely available in grocery stores and herbal markets worldwide, ensuring that its traditional benefits can be accessed by modern consumers.

Common products
Nutmeg seed (Myristica fragrans L.) is harvested for its dried seed, used as a spice in baking, sauces, and beverages. The outer aril, mace, is also dried and sold as a spice. Nutmeg essential oil, extracted from the seed, is sold for flavoring and fragrance applications.

Industrial and craft applications
The heartwood of Myristica fragrans is dense, fine‑grained, and resistant to decay, making it suitable for small furniture, flooring, and veneer. The wood is also used for ornamental carving and as a source of timber for small household items.

Food and beverages (non‑medicinal)
Nutmeg and mace are incorporated into baked goods (cookies, cakes, pastries), custards, and sauces. They are key flavoring agents in traditional beverages such as eggnog, mulled wine, and spiced teas. The essential oil is used as a flavoring in confectionery, chocolate, and alcoholic drinks.

Colorants and tanning
No documented commercial use of Myristica fragrans for dyes or tanning.

Wood and fiber
The timber is valued for its hardness (Janka hardness ~ 1,200 N) and attractive grain, used in fine woodworking. No significant fiber extraction is reported.

Fragrance and cosmetics
Nutmeg essential oil, rich in myristicin, elemicin, and safrole, is used in perfumery, soaps, and cosmetic formulations as a warm, spicy fragrance component. Mace oil is similarly employed in fragrance blends.

Properties relevant to use
The seed contains ~30–40 % oil, with a high proportion of sesquiterpenes and phenylpropanoids that confer aroma and flavor. The wood’s high lignin content and density provide durability and resistance to fungal attack, while the fine grain allows for smooth finishes.

Standards and regulation
Nutmeg and mace are regulated as food spices under EU Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008 and US FDA Food Additive Status. Essential oils used in cosmetics must comply with EU Cosmetics Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 and US FDA guidelines for fragrance ingredients. Timber products are subject to national forestry standards and, where applicable, ISO 9001 quality management for wood products.

Sustainability and sourcing
Myristica fragrans is cultivated primarily in Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and the Caribbean. Sustainable production is promoted through certification schemes such as the Rainforest Alliance and the Forest Stewardship Council, which address responsible harvesting, biodiversity conservation, and fair labor practices. By-products such as husk and bark are occasionally used as animal feed or compost, contributing to circular use of the crop.
