Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum‑graecum) has a long history of use as a medicinal tea and decoction. In Ayurvedic practice in India, the dried leaves and seeds are steeped in hot water to produce a bitter infusion that is taken to aid digestion and to stimulate milk production in nursing mothers (Gupta et al., 2015). In the Middle East, Bedouin healers prepare a decoction of the whole plant, especially the leaves, to relieve cough and sore throat, and the same tea is used to treat mild constipation (Al‑Khalifa & Al‑Hammadi, 2018). Among the Oromo of Ethiopia, a maceration of the root in water is drunk as a tonic for fatigue and to support blood sugar control, a practice documented in ethnobotanical surveys of the region (Kebede & Tadesse, 2019).
A simple, safe recipe for a fenugreek tea is as follows: combine 1 teaspoon of dried fenugreek leaves or seeds with 1 cup (240 mL) of boiling water. Let the mixture steep for 10 minutes, then strain. Drink one cup twice daily. The tea is generally well tolerated; however, high doses may cause a maple‑syrup–like odor in the breath and, in rare cases, mild gastrointestinal upset. Pregnant women should consult a healthcare provider before using fenugreek teas, as the plant has been reported to have uterine stimulant properties.
Fenugreek’s therapeutic effects are largely attributed to its rich content of saponins (notably diosgenin), alkaloids such as trigonelline, and flavonoids. These compounds have been shown to possess anti‑inflammatory, hypoglycaemic, and lactogenic activities that align with the traditional uses described above.
Modern research continues to explore fenugreek’s antidiabetic and lactation‑promoting properties, and the plant is now available as a dietary supplement in many countries, reflecting its enduring relevance from folk medicine to contemporary health products.
