Trigonella (L.) is a genus of annual or perennial herbs and subshrubs in Fabaceae (tribe Trifolieae) with about 230 species and a broad distribution across the Mediterranean, Macaronesia, Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia, the Indian subcontinent, and North Africa. The type species is Trigonella foenum-graecum L., widely cultivated as fenugreek. Most species occupy arid and semi-arid rangelands, open woodlands, and disturbed sites, often on calcareous or sandy soils.

The genus is characterized by trifoliate leaves with small stipules and conspicuous bracteoles subtending the calyx; flowers are typically yellow to orange, sometimes purple-tinged, arranged in sessile or shortly pedunculate heads, racemes, or solitary in axils; the calyx is campanulate with five equal or nearly equal teeth; the corolla is papilionaceous with a standard that is longer than the wings; the androecium is diadelphous (9+1). Pods are linear to oblong, compressed or somewhat terete, frequently prominently ribbed, and dehiscent or tardily so; seeds are usually ovoid and smooth. Trichomes vary from glabrous to densely glandular-pubescent.

Species richness peaks in the Mediterranean–Irano-Turanian region, with notable centers of endemism in Turkey, the Levant, and Central Asia. Many taxa are range-restricted, occurring from low elevations to over 2500 meters, favoring steppe, scrub, and rocky slopes. A substantial number of Trigonella species are annual weeds of cultivated fields and fallow land; others are ornamentals or pasture herbs. The fruit of T. foenum-graecum is used as a spice and condiment, and several species are cultivated for forage.

Intrinsic biology is incompletely documented, but most species appear to be entomophilous and bear extrafloral nectaries. Pollinators are reported to include bees in some taxa, but generalization across the genus remains tentative. Seeds possess hard coats and may exhibit dormancy compatible with arid regimes, although detailed seed biology is poorly synthesized.

Taxonomically, Trigonella has been maintained distinct from Medicago and Trifolium despite close affinities within Trifolieae. Recent molecular work confirms these generic boundaries (Lewis et al., 2005). Formerly, Melilotus was often merged into Trigonella, but later treatments consistently treat it separately. Within Trigonella, sectional limits and synonymy are still unsettled in parts of Asia and North Africa. Until the application of molecular systematics becomes broadly inclusive of regional floras, circumscriptions will remain provisional (Stevens, 2001; Ferguson et al., 2000). Further nomenclatural clarity is expected from the ongoing World Flora synthesis.

Human relevance is primarily agronomic and horticultural, with T. foenum-graecum widely cultivated for its seed spice; other species are used as ornamentals or pasture. Some annual taxa are locally weedy, but few are recognized as aggressive invaders at continental scales.

Many Trigonella taxa are data-deficient, and conservation assessments are lacking for most species, especially in arid Central Asian highlands and Levant mountain ranges. Targeted fieldwork and integrative taxonomic revisions are required to refine species limits and geographic distributions.
