Swertia japonica, known in Japanese Kampo medicine as “Sōshō,” is traditionally prepared as a decoction or infusion of its dried root to relieve stomach discomfort. Among the Japanese, the root is boiled for 15–20 minutes and the liquid is drunk to treat dyspepsia, abdominal pain, and mild diarrhea, according to the Japanese Pharmacopoeia 2015. In China, the same root is used in a decoction for stomach upset and chronic gastritis, as recorded in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia 2015. Korean practitioners also employ a decoction of the root for indigestion and abdominal cramps, a use documented in the Korean Pharmacopoeia 2018. These three cultures all rely on the bitter, warming properties of the root to stimulate digestion and reduce intestinal inflammation.
A simple, safe recipe for a mild tea is as follows: take 5 g of dried Swertia japonica root, place it in a pot with 200 ml of freshly boiled water, and let it steep for 10 minutes. Strain the liquid, discard the solids, and drink 1–2 cups per day. Because the root contains potent bitter compounds, it is advisable to avoid this tea during pregnancy or lactation, and to limit intake to no more than 10 g of root per day to prevent gastrointestinal upset.
