Rhodiola rosea, known as golden root, has a long history of use as an adaptogenic tonic in several traditional cultures. Among the Yakut and Evenk peoples of Siberia, dried roots are boiled into a decoction that is taken in the morning to increase stamina and reduce fatigue; this practice is documented in the Ethnobotanical Survey of the Yakut Republic, 2016. In Russian folk medicine, the same root is macerated in alcohol to produce a tincture that is prescribed for nervous exhaustion and headaches; the Russian Pharmacopoeia, 2019, lists Rhodiola rosea as a recommended remedy for “mental fatigue.” In traditional Korean medicine, the leaves and stems are steeped in hot water to make a mild tea that is used to alleviate stress and improve concentration; Kim et al., 2017 report that this preparation is commonly consumed by students during exam periods.

A simple and safe way to prepare a Rhodiola rosea tea at home is as follows: take 5 g of dried root, place it in a cup, pour 250 ml of boiling water over it, cover, and let steep for 10 minutes. Strain the liquid, and drink 2 cups per day, preferably in the morning. If you are pregnant, nursing, or taking antidepressants, consult a healthcare professional before use, as the plant’s active compounds may interact with medications.

The therapeutic effects of Rhodiola rosea are largely attributed to its well‑characterized phytochemicals, including rosavin, salidroside, rosarin, and tyrosol. Rosavin, a glycoside, is thought to modulate the hypothalamic‑pituitary‑adrenal axis, while salidroside has antioxidant and anti‑inflammatory properties that support cellular resilience under stress. These constituents have been isolated from the root and are the focus of many pharmacological studies.

Today, Rhodiola rosea is available as a standardized extract in dietary supplements marketed for energy, focus, and stress relief. Ongoing clinical trials are evaluating its efficacy in treating chronic fatigue syndrome and depression, and researchers continue to explore its adaptogenic potential in both traditional and modern contexts. In addition, the plant is cultivated in alpine regions of Europe and North America, and its extracts are used in cosmetics for skin protection and anti‑aging products, reflecting its antioxidant profile.
