Broussonetia papyrifera, commonly called paper mulberry, has been used for centuries in several Asian folk medicine systems. In Chinese traditional medicine the bark is boiled to produce a decoction that is drunk to relieve cough and sore throat, while the leaves are macerated in alcohol to make a tincture used for diarrhea and skin inflammation (Li et al., 2015). In the Indian state of Rajasthan, dried bark is ground and mixed with hot water to prepare a tea that is taken to reduce fever and treat urinary tract infections (Sharma et al., 2018). In the Philippines, the bark is sliced and applied as a poultice to wounds and burns, and a leaf infusion is used to soothe stomach cramps (Cruz et al., 2019). These three cultures illustrate the plant’s versatility in treating respiratory, digestive, and skin conditions through infusions, decoctions, tinctures, and poultices.

To make a mild bark tea, take 5 g of dried bark, add 250 ml of boiling water, cover, and steep for 10 minutes. Strain and drink warm. This dose is considered safe for adults; however, pregnant women should avoid the tea because of possible uterine stimulant effects, and individuals with kidney disease should limit intake due to the high tannin content.

The therapeutic effects of Broussonetia papyrifera are attributed to a range of well‑established phytochemicals. The bark contains high levels of tannins, especially ellagitannins, which have astringent and antimicrobial properties. Flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol are present in the leaves and contribute to anti‑inflammatory activity. Lignans, including pinoresinol, have been isolated from the bark and are thought to underlie the antidiabetic and hepatoprotective actions reported in laboratory studies.

Recent pharmacological investigations confirm the anti‑inflammatory and wound‑healing potential of the bark extract, and a small clinical trial in China found that a standardized decoction reduced cough frequency in patients with chronic bronchitis (Zhang et al., 2022). The plant is also cultivated for its fibers, and the bark is marketed as a natural tannin source for the food and textile industries. Thus, Broussonetia papyrifera remains a valuable resource for both traditional healers and modern science.
