Albizia julibrissin (Durazz.) is a deciduous tree whose bark, leaves, and root have been used in several traditional medicine systems. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the dried bark is prepared as a decoction to treat fever, inflammation, and rheumatic pain; the leaves are brewed as a mild tea for cough and sore throat (Li et al., 2015). In Ayurvedic practice, the bark and root are macerated in alcohol to produce a tincture that is taken for febrile illnesses and as a diuretic (Sharma et al., 2018). Among the Turkish folk healers of eastern Anatolia, a poultice of crushed bark and fresh leaves is applied to swollen joints and skin lesions, and a decoction of bark is drunk to relieve arthritic pain (Yilmaz et al., 2016). These three cultures illustrate the plant’s versatility across Asia and the Middle East.

A simple and safe preparation is a bark tea. Take 5 g of dried bark, place it in a pot with 250 ml of boiling water, and let it steep for 10 minutes. Strain the liquid, allow it to cool slightly, and drink two cups per day. This dosage is considered safe for most adults; however, pregnant women should avoid the tea because the bark contains compounds that may stimulate uterine contractions. If you have liver or kidney disease, consult a healthcare professional before use.

The therapeutic effects of Albizia julibrissin are largely attributed to its flavonoid content, especially quercetin and kaempferol, as well as triterpenoid saponins and coumarins that have been isolated from the bark and leaves. These compounds exhibit anti‑inflammatory, antioxidant, and mild analgesic activities that align with the plant’s traditional uses for fever, pain, and rheumatism.

Modern research has begun to validate these ethnobotanical claims. Recent pharmacological studies have shown that bark extracts inhibit cyclo‑oxygenase enzymes and reduce pro‑inflammatory cytokines, supporting its anti‑arthritic potential (Zhang et al., 2022). Commercially, the bark is available as a natural tea in specialty herbal shops, and the plant remains popular as an ornamental tree in parks and private gardens. In addition, the bark’s essential oil contains limonene and linalool, which contribute to its aromatic properties and may enhance its anti‑inflammatory effect. The leaves also contain alkaloids that have been shown to possess mild sedative activity, supporting their use in traditional cough remedies. Because of its ornamental value, many urban gardens cultivate Albizia julibrissin, and some nurseries now offer dried bark for home use, making the plant accessible to both hobbyists and practitioners of natural medicine.

- The bast fiber from the inner bark provides a durable material for cordage and coarse textile applications.

Fragrance and cosmetics:
- The pink flowers emit a sweet scent and their volatile compounds are incorporated into perfume blends and cosmetic formulations for fragrance.

Properties relevant to use:
- Wood: density ~0.7 g cm⁻³, lignin ~25 % dry weight, hardness suitable for carving and machining.
- Bark: hydrolyzable tannin content ~15 % dry weight, providing a high‑affinity tanning agent.
- Seed oil: composition dominated by unsaturated fatty acids (linoleic and oleic), yielding a non‑drying oil suited for industrial applications.

Standards and regulation:
- Timber from cultivated trees may be graded under ISO timber‑testing standards and can obtain FSC/PEFC certification when sourced sustainably.
- In several US states the species is listed as invasive; sale, planting and transport are regulated to prevent spread.

Sustainability and sourcing:
- Wild harvesting of bark and wood can threaten local populations; cultivation in managed plantations and propagation by seed provide a renewable supply.
- Fast seed germination and vigorous growth facilitate short‑rotation harvesting for ornamental and minor‑timber markets while mitigating invasive risk through responsible horticultural practices.

Sow seeds at 20°C, expecting germination within 3 months without further temperature treatment.
Requires Scarification: Scarification involves physically breaking, scratching, or softening the seed coat to allow water absorption and germination to occur. This can be done by nicking the seed coat with a knife or rubbing the seeds between sheets of sandpaper.
Requires Soaking: These seeds need to be soaked in warm water until they swell, which can take 24-48 hours. Seeds that float are usually not viable and should be discarded, along with the soaking water.
