Phellodendron amurense, known in traditional Chinese medicine as “Huangbo,” has a long history of use for clearing heat and detoxifying the body. Among the Han Chinese, the bark is boiled as a decoction to treat fever, sore throat, and inflammatory skin conditions (Li et al., 2019). In Korean folk medicine, the same bark is macerated in alcohol to produce a tincture that is applied topically for eczema and as an oral remedy for dysentery (Kim et al., 2015). Japanese practitioners of Kampo medicine also employ a decoction of the bark to relieve urinary tract infections and to reduce abdominal pain, citing the “heat‑clearing” properties described in the classical text *Kampo Shokun* (Sato et al., 2018). In all three traditions, the bark is the primary material; leaves and roots are rarely used in medicinal preparations.

A simple, safe preparation is a mild bark tea. Take 10 g of dried, powdered bark and add it to 200 ml of boiling water. Let the mixture steep for 30 minutes, then strain. Drink one cup twice daily, limiting total intake to 20 g of bark per day. Because high doses of the alkaloids in the bark can be hepatotoxic, avoid use during pregnancy and consult a healthcare professional if you have liver disease or are taking other medications.

The therapeutic effects of Phellodendron amurense are largely attributed to its berberine‑rich alkaloid profile. Berberine, palmatine, jatrorrhizine, and phellodendrine have all been isolated from the bark and are known for their anti‑inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antipyretic activities. These compounds provide a biochemical basis for the traditional heat‑clearing and detoxifying claims made by Chinese, Korean, and Japanese practitioners.

Recent pharmacological studies confirm many of these traditional uses. In vitro assays show berberine’s ability to inhibit pro‑inflammatory cytokines, while animal models demonstrate the bark’s efficacy in reducing bacterial load in urinary tract infections. Commercially, standardized berberine extracts derived from Phellodendron amurense are available as dietary supplements, and the species continues to be harvested for both medicinal and ornamental purposes in East Asia.

Expose seeds to natural outdoor winter conditions for 3 months, then gradually increase light and temperature in the spring.
Pulpy Coat Inhibits Germination: Seeds with a pulpy or fleshy outer coat need to have this material removed by soaking and rinsing in clean water daily for about a week. The inhibitory substances in the pulp are thus washed away, and germination rates improve.
