Rheum tanguticum, known in Chinese as Tanggu, has a long history of use in traditional medicine across several cultures. In the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (2020) the dried root is prescribed as a decoction to treat urinary tract infections, kidney stones, and constipation, with the root boiled in water for 30–60 minutes. Among the Mongolian people, the root is macerated in alcohol to produce a tincture used for urinary disorders and as a poultice for abdominal pain (Mongolian Traditional Medicine, 2017). Tibetan practitioners also prepare a tea from the root, steeped in hot water for 15 minutes, to relieve urinary retention and promote diuresis (Tibetan Medicine, 2019). The root is also applied as a poultice to relieve abdominal cramps.

A simple decoction can be made at home: take 10 g of dried Rheum tanguticum root, add 200 ml of boiling water, simmer for 30 minutes, then strain and drink one cup. This yields a mild, slightly bitter tea that can be taken twice daily. Because the herb contains potent laxative anthraquinones, limit the dose to 10 g per day and avoid use during pregnancy or in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal sensitivity. The therapeutic effects of Rheum tanguticum are largely attributed to its anthraquinone alkaloids, such as emodin and rhein, which have documented diuretic and laxative activity. The plant also contains stilbenes, including resveratrol, and tannins that contribute to its anti‑inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. These constituents have been isolated and quantified in several phytochemical studies, providing a chemical basis for the traditional uses described above. These compounds also exhibit mild antimicrobial activity against common urinary pathogens.

Recent pharmacological investigations confirm the anti‑inflammatory and antimicrobial actions of Rheum tanguticum extracts, and the herb is now available as a standardized supplement in some herbal markets. Its continued use in Chinese, Mongolian, and Tibetan communities underscores its enduring relevance as a natural remedy for urinary and digestive ailments. Ongoing clinical trials are evaluating its efficacy in treating urinary tract infections.
