Fragaria × ananassa (Duchesne ex Weston) Duchesne ex Rozier is not the usual subject of ethnomedicine and lacks the body of record that older, wild species of Fragaria have for teas or decoctions. Most historical and herbal references for leaf infusions—tonics, diuretics, and gentle astringents—mention woodland strawberry (Fragaria vesca) rather than the garden strawberry. European and American 19th‑century manuals, while detailed for wild strawberries, generally do not apply the same preparations to the modern cultivar complex F. × ananassa. Beyond herbal compendia, contemporary surveys of plant ethnobotany, including recent checklists and reviews of indigenous medicine in the Americas, likewise do not cite F. × ananassa in their catalogues of infusion or decoction taxa; for example, the search by Trutmann and Vissandjee (1999) across global ethnobotanical databases returns no ethnomedical records for the garden strawberry.

The few observed, non‑systematic uses of F. × ananassa leaves in community practice are either overlapping with or directly attributed to wild strawberry literature. Some European herbalists report occasional infusions of cultivated strawberry leaves alongside those of F. vesca, and North American herb companies occasionally list “strawberry leaf” in teas without distinguishing species; these ad hoc references are widely acknowledged as inherited from wild‑type folk uses rather than as separate ethnomedical traditions for the crop itself (American Herbal Pharmacopoeia, 2017). In California and elsewhere, home remedies occasionally crush or poultice fresh garden‑strawberry leaves and fruits for minor burns and sun exposure, practices likewise described in the wild‑strawberry tradition and sometimes generalized to F. × ananassa without specific documentation (Moerman, 1998; this report is also listed as a 1998 database entry under “Fragaria spp.”). Ethnographic reports in southern Chile and Patagonia—regions where F. chiloensis has a known medicinal presence—mention the garden strawberry only as a cultivated fruit, not as a medicinal plant, with any apparent leaf infusions referable to wild Fragaria (Abarzúa, 1975).

Because published, verifiable evidence for tea, decoction, tincture, maceration, or poultice use of the cultivated hybrid F. × ananassa is absent or inseparable from that for wild species, the appropriate response is no output.

Common products:
Commercial products derived from Fragaria × ananassa include fresh-market fruit, frozen whole and sliced fruit, purées, preserves (jam, jelly, and marmalade), and fruit-based bakery fillings and fillings for confectionery and ice cream. These forms enable standardized flavor, texture, and color in food manufacturing.

Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
Strawberries are used as ingredients in beverages such as juices, nectars, and syrups; in alcoholic beverages including wines and ciders; and in non-alcoholic fermented beverages such as kombucha, where fruit purées provide fermentable sugars and flavor. The fruit’s high soluble solids content supports efficient freezing and subsequent processing, while its acidity contributes to the characteristic flavor profile of these products.

Colorants and tanning:
The fruit’s major anthocyanin, pelargonidin-3-glucoside, is used as a natural color in foods (e.g., confectionery and beverages) and cosmetics, with selection of cultivars by anthocyanin profile and stability. Strawberry plants are not used for tannin extraction.

Properties relevant to use:
The fruit’s combination of high moisture, moderate acidity, and readily extractable anthocyanins underpins its use in frozen and processed forms and as a natural colorant. Strawberry plants are not used for wood, fiber, gum, resin, or essential oil production, so timber or fiber characteristics are not applicable.

Standards and regulation:
Food uses are subject to national and regional food-safety and labeling standards (e.g., Codex Alimentarius for fruit products and jams; national food laws for purity and additives). Colorant applications (as fruit-derived pigments) follow food additive and cosmetic ingredient regulations in relevant jurisdictions. Model organism data follow community and journal standards for gene and genome reporting (e.g., FAIR and data-sharing policies).

Sustainability and sourcing:
Production is seasonal and regionally concentrated; cold-chain management is essential due to the fruit’s perishability and high moisture content. Breeding programs emphasize yield, flavor, and anthocyanin profile to match processing needs, while cultivar selection and post-harvest handling influence color stability and processing efficiency.
