Eucommia ulmoides, known in Chinese as Du Zhong, has a long history of use in East Asian traditional medicine. Among the Han Chinese, the bark is boiled into a decoction to treat joint pain, muscle weakness, and hypertension; the same preparation is cited in the 2020 Chinese Pharmacopoeia as a remedy for “kidney‑deficiency” and “lumbago” (Chinese Pharmacopoeia Commission, 2020). In Korea, Kim et al. (2018) report that a decoction of the bark, combined with ginseng, is used to relieve chronic back pain and improve circulation, a practice still common in rural communities. Vietnamese herbalists, according to Nguyen et al. (2019), brew a tea from the bark and leaves to lower blood pressure and treat edema, especially in the elderly. In all three cultures the bark is the primary material; leaves and roots are occasionally macerated in alcohol for tinctures used as topical poultices to soothe muscle soreness.
A simple, safe decoction can be prepared at home. Take 10 g of dried bark, add 200 ml of water, and simmer for 30 minutes. Strain the liquid and drink 200 ml twice daily, preferably after meals. This dose is well within the range used in clinical studies and is considered safe for most adults; however, pregnant women should avoid it, and individuals on antihypertensive medication should monitor blood pressure closely, as the decoction can lower systolic values.
The therapeutic effects of Eucommia ulmoides are largely attributed to its lignan content, particularly pinoresinol and lariciresinol, which have been shown to possess antioxidant and vasodilatory properties. Iridoid glycosides such as geniposidic acid and flavonoids like quercetin are also present and contribute to anti‑inflammatory activity.
