Withania somnifera, also known as ashwagandha or winter cherry, is a shrub in the nightshade family that is native to India, the Middle East, and parts of Africa. It has been used in traditional Indian medicine for centuries and is now sold as a dietary supplement. However, there is not enough scientific evidence to support its effectiveness or safety for treating any health conditions. The plant has small green flowers and orange-red fruit and is cultivated in dry regions. It is prone to pests and diseases, including leaf spot and carmine red spider mites. Withanolides, alkaloids, and other compounds have been isolated from the plant, and it is often referred to as "Indian ginseng." However, it may cause adverse effects and should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
