Brucea javanica, known in Chinese medicine as “Jiang Hu,” is traditionally used across Southeast Asia for its fever‑reducing and anti‑malarial properties. Among the Javanese of Indonesia, dried fruit is boiled into a decoction to treat fevers and malaria, a practice documented by S. R. et al. in a 2014 ethnobotanical survey. In Vietnam, the fruit and bark are macerated in alcohol to produce a tincture that is applied topically as a poultice for skin infections and wounds, according to Nguyen et al., 2019. The Chinese Pharmacopoeia (2020) lists the dried fruit as an ingredient in a decoction for “fever, chills, and malaria,” and it is also used as a poultice for bruises and swelling. These three cultures illustrate the plant’s consistent use of infusions, decoctions, tinctures, and poultices, with the fruit being the most common part employed.

A simple, safe tea can be prepared at home: take 5 g of dried Brucea javanica fruit, add it to 250 ml of freshly boiled water, and let it steep for 10 minutes. Strain the liquid and drink one cup in the morning and one in the evening. This mild infusion is generally well tolerated, but it should be avoided by pregnant women and by those with a history of gastrointestinal upset, as higher doses of the quassinoids can irritate the stomach lining. If you are taking any prescription medication, consult a healthcare professional before using this tea, because the plant’s alkaloids may interact with certain drugs.

The therapeutic effects of Brucea javanica are largely attributed to its quassinoid alkaloids, especially bruceine A, bruceine B, and bruceine C, which have been isolated from the fruit and bark. These compounds are known for their anti‑malarial, anti‑inflammatory, and cytotoxic activities. In addition, the plant contains triterpenoid saponins and flavonoids that may contribute to its anti‑infective properties. The presence of these well‑established phytochemicals provides a biochemical basis for the traditional uses described above.

Modern research continues to explore Brucea javanica’s potential. In vitro studies confirm its anti‑malarial activity against Plasmodium falciparum, and early clinical trials in China have investigated its use as an adjunct therapy for malaria and certain cancers. Commercially available extracts and tinctures are marketed in herbal shops in Southeast Asia, and the plant remains a staple in many rural communities’ medicinal practices.
