The bark also contains paeoniflorin, paeonin, albiflorin, oxypaeoniflorin, benzoylpaeoniflorin, benzoylalbiflorin, and benzoyloxypaeoniflorin. The flowers contain flavonoids, tannins, polysaccharides, and volatile oils.

Paeonia × suffruticosa, also known as the tree peony, is a group of cultivars that have been hybridized with species from the subsection Vaginatae. In China, it is known as mǔdān and has been cultivated for both medicinal and ornamental purposes for thousands of years. Genetic analysis has shown that five species make up the parentage of these cultivars, with Paeonia cathayana being the original maternal parent. The plant has also been crossbred with other peonies, resulting in unique cultivar groups such as the Lemoine hybrids and Itoh cultivars. Paeonia × suffruticosa is less common in the United States but can be found in plant nurseries. It is known for its long-lasting flowers and is considered the "king of flowers" in Chinese culture, symbol
