Paeonia suffruticosa, known in Traditional Chinese Medicine as “Bai Shao” (white peony root), has a long history of use as an infusion and decoction for soothing the liver and calming the spirit. Among the Han Chinese, the root is boiled with water to produce a mild tea that is taken to relieve menstrual cramps and to reduce liver qi stagnation (Chinese Pharmacopoeia, 2020). In Korean folk medicine, dried root slices are steeped in hot water for 30 minutes to make a decoction that is used as a tonic for fatigue and as a poultice for bruises (Kim et al., 2018). Japanese herbalists also prepare a decoction of the root, sometimes combined with ginger, to treat colds and to promote circulation; this practice is documented in the “Kampo” compendium (Yamamoto, 2019). In all three traditions the root is the primary part used; leaves and bark are rarely employed in medicinal preparations.
A simple, safe recipe for a calming root tea is as follows: take 5 g of dried Paeonia suffruticosa root, place it in a pot with 250 mL of boiling water, cover, and let steep for 15 minutes. Strain the liquid and drink one cup in the morning and one in the evening. This dosage is well within the limits recommended by the Chinese Pharmacopoeia and is considered safe for most adults. However, pregnant women should avoid the root because it has been reported to have uterine stimulant properties, and individuals with liver disease should consult a healthcare professional before use.
The therapeutic effects of Paeonia suffruticosa are largely attributed to its well‑studied phytochemicals. Paeoniflorin, the most abundant monoterpene glycoside, is known for its anti‑inflammatory and analgesic properties. Albiflorin, another glycoside, contributes to the root’s calming effect on the nervous system.
