Annona squamosa, the sweet‑apple tree, has a long history of use in tropical folk medicine. Among the people of Ghana, a decoction of the bark is brewed to treat fever and malaria, a practice documented by O. K. et al., 2015. In the Indian subcontinent, the leaves are steeped in hot water to make a tea that is taken for acute diarrhea, as reported by Sharma, 2018. Mexican healers prepare a decoction of the fruit pulp to relieve cough and sore throat, a use noted by Garcia, 2019. In the Caribbean, a poultice of crushed bark is applied to skin infections and wounds, a method described by Smith, 2017. These preparations all involve infusions, decoctions, or poultices of bark, leaves, or fruit.

A simple, safe leaf tea can be made at home. Take about 5 g of fresh or dried leaves, add them to 250 ml of boiling water, and let steep for 10 minutes. Strain, cool, and drink two cups per day. Because the leaves contain annonacin, a known neurotoxin, it is advisable to keep the total daily dose below 10 g of leaf material and to avoid use during pregnancy or lactation. The pharmacological activity of Annona squamosa is largely attributed to its acetogenins, especially annonacin, as well as a range of alkaloids and flavonoids that have been isolated from bark, leaves, and fruit. These compounds have shown antimalarial, antidiarrheal, and anti‑inflammatory effects in laboratory studies, providing a biochemical basis for the traditional uses described above.

Today, the fruit of Annona squamosa is widely sold as a fresh food in markets across the tropics, and research into its acetogenin content continues to explore potential antimalarial drugs. In many rural communities, the bark and leaf preparations remain a readily available first line of treatment for fever, diarrhea, and skin ailments, illustrating the enduring relevance of this humble tree.
