Smilax china, known as Chinese smilax, has been a staple in East Asian traditional medicine for centuries. In the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (2020) the dried root is prescribed as a decoction to relieve rheumatism, reduce joint pain, and soothe coughs. The Korean Pharmacopoeia (2015) lists the same root as a decoction for treating inflammation and swelling, and also as a maceration for skin irritations. The Vietnamese Pharmacopoeia (2018) records its use as a poultice for external bruises and as a decoction for cough and sore throat. Across all three traditions the root is the primary part employed, and the preparations are typically made by boiling or steeping the dried material in water.

A simple and safe way to experience these traditional benefits is to brew a mild tea. Take 5 g of dried Smilax china root, add it to 200 ml of freshly boiled water, cover, and let steep for 10 minutes. Strain the liquid, allow it to cool slightly, and drink 2–3 times a day. The total daily dose should not exceed 5 g of root. The tea can be sweetened with honey or a splash of lemon, but it is not recommended for pregnant or lactating women or for individuals with known hypersensitivity to saponins, as large amounts may cause mild gastrointestinal upset.

The pharmacological activity of Smilax china is largely attributed to its saponins, particularly smilagenin, as well as flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol and a range of polysaccharides. These compounds have been shown to inhibit inflammatory mediators, reduce oxidative stress, and modulate immune responses. Saponins act as surfactants that can disrupt inflammatory cell membranes, flavonoids scavenge free radicals, and polysaccharides enhance macrophage activity, providing a scientific basis for the traditional use of the root in treating pain, swelling, and respiratory irritation.

Recent research has confirmed the anti‑inflammatory and anti‑arthritic potential of Smilax china extracts, and the root is now available as a dietary supplement in several Asian markets. Standardized extracts are marketed for joint health, and some clinical trials are exploring its efficacy in mild to moderate osteoarthritis. The continued use of Smilax china in traditional practices and its emerging evidence base make it a compelling example of how ancient wisdom can inform modern wellness.

Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
Rhizomes are used in East Asia for starch extraction; the starch is employed to produce a translucent jelly or noodle-like food (commonly made from “tián fěn” starch and traded internationally as agar-agar type or “mosi” jelly products). Processing involves water extraction, settling, and drying to obtain a starch that yields clear, elastic gels upon hydration and heating. Historical and commercial records confirm this as the main non-medicinal use of S. china rhizomes.

Properties relevant to use:
The rhizome starch gels upon cooking, giving a soft, elastic texture; it is exploited in East Asian food processing and export markets for its gelling behavior.

Standards and regulation:
In Japan, “mosi” jelly produced from starch gels is regulated as a food under the Japanese Food Sanitation Act, including specification tests (e.g., agar content/gelling strength for agar-based gels; solid content and sensory attributes for starch-based variants). Exports are subject to the destination country’s compositional labeling and labeling rules for processed foods.
