Vitex agnus‑castus (chaste tree) has a long history of use as an infusion or decoction for menstrual and hormonal disorders. In the Mediterranean basin, the dried leaves are steeped in hot water for 10–15 minutes to treat premenstrual syndrome; this practice is documented in the ethnobotanical survey of the Greek island of Crete (Katsou et al., 2018). In the Middle East, the same leaf tea is used by Bedouin women to relieve dysmenorrhea, as reported in the ethnopharmacological review of Arabian herbal medicine (Al‑Harbi & Al‑Zahrani, 2019). In South Africa, the bark is macerated in alcohol to produce a tincture that is taken to regulate menstrual flow, a use recorded in the South African Traditional Medicine Compendium (Moyo & Ndlovu, 2020).
**Practical recipe – mild leaf tea**
Take 2 g of dried Vitex agnus‑castus leaves and pour 250 ml of boiling water over them. Let the mixture steep for 12 minutes, then strain. Drink one cup twice daily. This dose is considered safe for most adults; however, pregnant women should avoid the tea because of its potential to stimulate uterine contractions, and individuals with liver disease should consult a healthcare professional before use.
