Magnolia obovata, also known as the Japanese cucumber tree, is a deciduous tree native to Japan and the Kurile Islands. It can grow up to 30 meters tall and has large, leathery leaves with a silvery underside. The tree produces large, cup-shaped flowers with a strong scent in early summer, followed by oblong-cylindrical fruits containing black seeds with a fleshy orange-red coating. The wood of this tree is highly sought after by craftsmen for its strength and ease of use. In Japan, the leaves are also used for wrapping food and as a makeshift dish for grilling.
