Rheum officinale, commonly known as European rhubarb, has a long history of use in several folk medicine traditions. According to Bennett et al., 2021, the people of the North Caucasus prepare a decoction of the dried root by simmering 10 g in 500 ml of water for 20 minutes; the resulting tea is taken to relieve constipation and to stimulate appetite. In the Turkish folk pharmacopeia, Yilmaz et al., 2015 report that the root is macerated in alcohol to produce a tincture (1:5, root to ethanol) which is used as a mild laxative and to treat stomach cramps. Among the Balkan communities, Khan et al., 2018 describe a poultice made from crushed fresh root applied to the abdomen to ease digestive discomfort and to reduce bloating. All three preparations involve the root, the most commonly used part of the plant, and are typically consumed in small doses to avoid excessive laxative effects.

A simple, safe way to enjoy the traditional benefits of Rheum officinale is to make a mild root tea. Take 5 g of dried root, place it in a cup, and pour 250 ml of freshly boiled water over it. Let the mixture steep for 10 minutes, then strain. Drink one cup in the morning or evening, but limit total daily intake to no more than 10 g of root to reduce the risk of diarrhea or electrolyte imbalance. Pregnant or nursing women should avoid this tea, as the strong laxative compounds can stimulate uterine contractions. If you have kidney disease or are taking diuretics, consult a healthcare professional before use.

The therapeutic effects of Rheum officinale are largely attributed to its anthraquinone constituents, including emodin, rhein, aloe‑emodin, and chrysophanol. These compounds have been shown to stimulate intestinal motility, possess mild anti‑inflammatory activity, and can act as natural laxatives. Modern research continues to investigate these molecules for their potential in treating constipation, inflammatory bowel disease, and even certain cancers. Today, extracts of Rheum officinale are available as dietary supplements and are also used in some commercial herbal teas marketed for digestive health, keeping the plant’s traditional uses alive in contemporary wellness practices.
