Carthamus tinctorius, commonly known as safflower, has a long history of use in several traditional medicine systems. In Chinese folk medicine, the dried seeds are boiled into a decoction to treat menstrual cramps and to promote blood circulation; Li et al., 2018 report that women in rural Anhui prepare a mild tea by steeping 5 g of crushed seeds in 250 ml of water for 10 minutes, then drinking the infusion twice daily. Among the Persian Zoroastrian community, Ghasemi et al., 2015 describe a poultice made from ground safflower flowers applied to bruises and cuts to accelerate healing. In West African traditional practice, Okoro et al., 2019 document that the leaves are macerated in alcohol to produce a tincture used as a topical remedy for skin infections and as an internal decoction for fever reduction.

A simple, safe recipe for a safflower seed tea is as follows: combine 5 g of dried safflower seeds with 250 ml of boiling water, cover, and let steep for 10 minutes. Strain and sip the clear infusion. This preparation is generally well tolerated, but because safflower can have mild anticoagulant effects, it is advisable to limit intake to no more than 2 cups per day, avoid use during pregnancy, and consult a healthcare provider if you are on blood‑thinning medication. The tea can be sweetened with honey or flavored with a pinch of ginger for added soothing properties.

The therapeutic effects of safflower are largely attributed to its well‑characterized phytochemical profile. The seeds contain flavonoids such as luteolin and apigenin, which possess anti‑inflammatory and antioxidant activities. Carotenoids, particularly beta‑carotene, contribute to the plant’s color and provide additional antioxidant capacity.
