Lippia origanoides, commonly called Mexican oregano, has a long history of use among several indigenous communities in Mexico. The Mixtec of Oaxaca prepare a decoction of fresh leaves and stems to soothe stomach cramps, relieve indigestion, and reduce fever, as documented by Sánchez et al., 2018. The Huichol people of Nayarit brew a tea from dried leaves to treat colds, coughs, and sore throats, a practice recorded in García et al., 2015. In the Yucatan Peninsula, Mayan healers macerate the leaves in alcohol to produce a tincture that is applied as a poultice for skin infections, wounds, and mild pain, described by Mendoza, 2010. These preparations all involve infusions, decoctions, tinctures, or poultices made from the leaves, and occasionally the stems.

A simple, everyday tea can be made by combining 5 g of dried Lippia origanoides leaves with 250 ml of freshly boiled water. Allow the mixture to steep for 10 minutes, then strain. Drink one cup in the morning and one in the evening, but limit total intake to no more than three cups per day. Pregnant women should avoid this tea, and individuals with liver disease or those taking anticoagulants should consult a healthcare professional before use. Adding a teaspoon of honey can improve taste and provide additional soothing effects for sore throats.

The medicinal properties of Lippia origanoides are largely attributed to its essential oil, which contains high concentrations of thymol, carvacrol, and linalool—monoterpenes known for their antimicrobial and anti‑inflammatory actions. Flavonoids such as luteolin and apigenin, also present in the leaves, contribute antioxidant activity and help modulate inflammation. These well‑established phytochemicals have been isolated from Lippia origanoides and are consistent with the plant’s traditional use for digestive discomfort, respiratory ailments, and skin conditions.

Recent laboratory studies confirm the antibacterial activity of Lippia origanoides essential oil against common pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, and the plant is now widely available as a culinary spice in Mexican markets and specialty stores worldwide. Its continued use in traditional medicine, combined with emerging research on its anti‑inflammatory and preservative potential, highlights the relevance of ethnobotanical knowledge for modern pharmacology and food science.

Common products:
Dried aerial parts (leaves and young stems) are marketed as “Mexican oregano” for culinary use. An essential oil is extracted from the same material and sold under the same trade name for fragrance and flavor applications.

Industrial and craft applications:
The essential oil is employed as a natural fragrance in soaps, detergents, candles, and other scented consumer goods. It is also used as a flavoring agent in snack foods, sauces, and processed meat products.

Food and beverages (non‑medicinal):
The dried leaves are used whole or ground as a spice in Mexican and Central‑American cooking, imparting a warm, oregano‑like flavor to soups, stews, beans, and grilled meats. The oil is incorporated into snack seasonings, condiment blends, and craft‑beer or soda infusions for flavoring purposes.

Fragrance and cosmetics:
In perfumery the oil serves as a top‑note for its intense herbaceous aroma. It is added to creams, lotions, shampoos, and household cleaners to provide a characteristic scent.

Properties relevant to use:
Lippia origanoides leaves contain 1.5–3.0 % essential oil; the oil’s major constituents are carvacrol (50–70 %), thymol (10–20 %), p‑cymene and γ‑terpinene. Carvacrol and thymol give the oil a strong, spicy aroma and moderate oxidative stability. Physically the oil is a clear to pale yellow liquid with a density of 0.92–0.95 g mL⁻¹ and a refractive index of 1.504–1.510 at 20 °C, properties that facilitate its incorporation into both fragrance and food formulations.

Standards and regulation:
Essential‑oil intended for food flavoring must comply with U.S. FDA 21 CFR 182.20 (GRAS) and FEMA GRAS listings for oregano oil. In the EU the oil is regulated under Regulation (EC) No 1334/2008 as a flavoring substance and must meet ISO 4720:2022 specifications (purity limits for carvacrol and thymol). ISO 6575 outlines gas‑chromatographic methods for volatile‑component analysis of the oil.

Sustainability and sourcing:
The plant is harvested from wild stands in Mexico, Central America and northern South America. Over‑harvesting has led to the development of small‑scale cultivation in Mexico and Guatemala, where Lippia origanoides is integrated into coffee and citrus agroforestry systems. Sustainable‑harvest guidelines recommend selective cutting of aerial parts and a 2–3 year interval between harvests to preserve wild populations.
