Sesamum indicum (L.) is widely cultivated for its edible seeds, but it also has a long history of medicinal use in several cultures. Among the Ayurvedic practitioners of India, sesame seed decoctions are taken as a mild tonic for digestive upset and to relieve constipation; the seeds are boiled in water for 15–20 minutes and the liquid is drunk, as described in the Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India, 2019. In the Yoruba communities of southwestern Nigeria, a decoction of roasted sesame seeds is used to treat fever and malaria; the seeds are simmered in water for 30 minutes, strained, and the infusion is taken orally, according to Ogunleye et al., 2015.
