Sesamum indicum (L.) is widely cultivated for its edible seeds, but it also has a long history of medicinal use in several cultures. Among the Ayurvedic practitioners of India, sesame seed decoctions are taken as a mild tonic for digestive upset and to relieve constipation; the seeds are boiled in water for 15–20 minutes and the liquid is drunk, as described in the Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India, 2019. In the Yoruba communities of southwestern Nigeria, a decoction of roasted sesame seeds is used to treat fever and malaria; the seeds are simmered in water for 30 minutes, strained, and the infusion is taken orally, according to Ogunleye et al., 2015. In traditional Chinese medicine, sesame seed oil is applied as a poultice to soothe skin inflammation and to promote wound healing; the oil is warmed and spread over the affected area, a practice recorded in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, 2020.

A simple, safe recipe for a sesame seed tea is as follows: combine 1 tablespoon (≈10 g) of whole sesame seeds with 250 ml of boiling water. Let the mixture steep for 10 minutes, then strain and drink warm. This tea is suitable for adults; pregnant women should limit intake to no more than 2 tablespoons per day, and individuals with sesame allergy should avoid it entirely. The tea can be taken up to three times daily for mild digestive discomfort.

The therapeutic effects of sesame seed preparations are largely attributed to the presence of sesamin, sesamol, and sesaminol, lignans that possess antioxidant and anti‑inflammatory properties. These compounds have been isolated from the seeds and are believed to underlie the traditional use of sesame for digestive and skin ailments.
