Senna obtusifolia, commonly called bastard senna, is widely used in traditional medicine across tropical regions. In the Yoruba communities of southwestern Nigeria, the dried leaves are boiled into a decoction that is drunk to relieve constipation and to treat mild diarrhoea; this practice is documented by Olatunde et al., 2015. In the Caribbean, particularly in Jamaica, the fresh pods are steeped in hot water to produce a tea that is taken as a mild laxative and also applied as a poultice to soothe skin irritations such as eczema and insect bites, as reported by Smith, 2018. In India, the leaves and stems are macerated in alcohol to create a tincture that is used externally for wound healing and internally for digestive upset, according to Gupta et al., 2019. These three independent traditions all rely on infusions or decoctions of the plant’s aerial parts to harness its medicinal properties.
A simple, safe tea can be prepared at home. Take 5 g of dried Senna obtusifolia leaves, place them in a cup, pour 250 ml of freshly boiled water, cover, and let steep for 10 minutes. Strain the liquid and drink one cup in the morning. Limit the intake to no more than two cups per day, and avoid use during pregnancy or if you have a history of gastrointestinal disorders. The tea’s mild laxative effect is due to the sennosides that are released during the steeping process.
The pharmacological activity of Senna obtusifolia is largely attributed to its anthraquinone glycosides, especially sennosides A and B, which are known to stimulate peristalsis in the colon. The plant also contains flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol, and tannins that contribute to its anti‑inflammatory and astringent effects. These constituents have been isolated and quantified in several phytochemical studies, providing a clear biochemical basis for the traditional uses described above.
Modern research continues to explore the safety and efficacy of Senna obtusifolia extracts. Clinical trials have confirmed its laxative potency, and the plant’s extracts are now available in commercial herbal preparations marketed as natural stool softeners. Traditional use remains common in rural communities, and the plant is still harvested for both medicinal and culinary purposes, underscoring its enduring relevance.
General Uses Top
Suggest a correction!Common products:
The plant is chiefly used as a leafy vegetable in parts of Africa; young leaves and tender shoots are harvested and cooked. Roasted, ground seeds have been used as a coffee substitute, imparting a coffee-like flavor but without caffeine.
Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
Leaves and tender shoots are consumed after cooking (e.g., boiled or sautéed). Roasted seeds are ground and used as a coffee substitute; mature pods and raw seeds are generally considered unsuitable for direct consumption due to bitterness.
Fragrance and cosmetics:
No documented uses.
Properties relevant to use:
Leaf tenderness when young; flavor development in roasted seed suitable for blending/coffee-substitute applications.
Standards and regulation:
No established standards or regulatory frameworks specific to S. obtusifolia have been reported.
Sustainability and sourcing:
It is a widespread weed of cultivated fields and disturbed sites; leaf harvesting is opportunistic from wild or feral stands, while seed collection for coffee substitute is incidental and not commercially organized.
Industrial and craft applications; Colorants and tanning; Wood and fiber:
No documented uses.
