Common products:
Milled grain products such as flour, semolina, and wholemeal flour; starch and modified starches; vital wheat gluten; wheat germ and wheat germ oil; and malted grain (green malt and kilned malt).

Industrial and craft applications:
Starch and modified starches are used as sizing agents and binders in papermaking and as thickeners and adhesives in corrugated boards, paper coatings, textiles, and building materials. Wheat flour pastes are used for paper and cardboard adhesives, while wheat straw is processed into pulp and paper and into fiberboard and biocomposites. Malt and grain are feedstocks for bioethanol and biofuel production. Wheat germ oil is processed into oil for technical and specialty uses.

Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
Flour is the principal ingredient for baking leavened and flat breads, cakes, cookies, pasta, noodles, breakfast cereals, and extruded snack foods. Semolina and durum-type products are used in pasta. Milled products serve as breading and batter systems in processed foods. Malted wheat is a brewing adjunct in beers and a feedstock for distilled spirits. Starch is used as a thickener and stabilizer in soups, sauces, bakery fillings, and confectionery. Wheat germ is used in breakfast cereals and muesli.

Colorants and tanning:
Wheat contains low levels of phenolic compounds; no established natural colorant or tannin products are reported.

Wood and fiber:
Wheat straw fiber is used for paper pulp and as a fiber component in fiberboard and biocomposites. The grain hulls are occasionally used as packaging filler. Fiber yields and processing details vary with cultivar and agronomy.

Fragrance and cosmetics:
Wheat-derived materials (wheat germ oil, hydrolyzed proteins, and starch) are used in cosmetic and personal care formulations as emollients, texturizers, and stabilizers in creams, lotions, and hair care products.

Properties relevant to use:
Wheat flour contains gluten proteins (glutenin and gliadin) that provide extensibility and elasticity for dough development in leavened baked goods. Wheat starch consists of amylose and amylopectin; native and chemically modified starches provide viscosity, film formation, and binding needed for adhesives and coatings. Wheat germ oil is rich in linoleic and linolenic acids. Straw fiber provides lignocellulosic cellulose suitable for papermaking and fiberboard after pulping and refining.

Standards and regulation:
Grain and flour specifications are standardized by national grain grading systems and Codex Alimentarius for food safety, moisture, ash, and protein content. Paper pulp, adhesives, and coatings standards follow ISO, ASTM, or EN methods for materials and performance. Cosmetic ingredient use and labeling are governed by regional regulations such as EU 1223/2009 and FDA/FTC guidelines in the United States.

Sustainability and sourcing:
Wheat is a globally cultivated annual crop; supply depends on climatic conditions, cultivar choice, and agronomic inputs. Straw harvesting reduces field residue and can lower tillage needs but must be balanced with soil carbon maintenance. Starch and gluten production are co-products of milling, increasing resource efficiency. Malting and ethanol production utilize grain surplus or off-spec batches.
