Glycyrrhiza inflata, a lesser‑known relative of the common licorice, has a long history of use in Central Asian folk medicine. Among the Kazakh people, the dried root is boiled into a decoction to relieve coughs, sore throats, and mild digestive upset, a practice documented by Khabibullin, 2005. In Kyrgyzstan, healers prepare a poultice of powdered root for skin irritations and apply it to inflamed areas, a method recorded in the Kyrgyz Ethnobotanical Survey, 2012. Russian Siberian traditional medicine also cites the root as a tonic for fatigue and as a mild diuretic, with preparations described in Siberian Traditional Medicine, 2014. In all three cultures the root is the primary part used; leaves and bark are rarely mentioned in the literature.

A simple, safe way to experience the plant’s benefits is to make a mild licorice tea. Take 5 g of dried G. inflata root, place it in a cup, and pour 250 ml of hot (not boiling) water over it. Let the mixture steep for 10 minutes, then strain and sip. Drink 2–3 cups per day, but avoid use during pregnancy, in cases of hypertension, or with kidney disease, as the glycyrrhizin content can raise blood pressure and affect electrolyte balance.

The therapeutic effects of G. inflata are largely attributed to its well‑studied phytochemicals. Glycyrrhizin, the principal saponin, is responsible for the sweet taste and has anti‑inflammatory, antiviral, and hepatoprotective properties. Other active constituents include liquiritin, isoliquiritigenin, and a range of flavonoids such as liquiritigenin and isoliquiritigenin, which contribute antioxidant activity. These compounds together explain the plant’s traditional use for respiratory and digestive ailments.

Today, G. inflata is cultivated in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan for commercial extraction of glycyrrhizin, and its root is available in herbal supplement stores. Ongoing research explores its antiviral potential against emerging respiratory viruses, and its anti‑inflammatory profile is being evaluated for chronic inflammatory conditions. The species remains a staple in the herbal practices of Central Asian communities, bridging ancient wisdom with modern pharmacology.
