Anemarrhena asphodeloides, known in traditional Chinese medicine as “Bai Zhi,” is chiefly used for its root. In the Pharmacopoeia of the People’s Republic of China (2005) the root is prescribed as a decoction for clearing heat, resolving dampness, and treating fever, cough, and abdominal pain. Among the Han Chinese, the root is also brewed as a mild tea to relieve sore throats and to calm the stomach, as reported by Li et al., 2019. In Korean traditional medicine the root is used in a decoction of 10 g in 1 L of water for 30 minutes to treat febrile illnesses and to strengthen the spleen, according to Kim et al., 2018. A 2017 ethnobotanical survey of Mongolian herders documented the use of a poultice made from powdered root applied to skin infections and ulcers, noting its soothing effect (Baatar et al., 2017). These preparations all involve infusions, decoctions, or macerations of the root, the primary medicinal part of the plant.

A simple, safe tea can be prepared by taking 5 g of dried Anemarrhena root, adding it to 200 ml of boiling water, and steeping for 30 minutes. Strain the liquid and drink warm. This mild infusion is suitable for adults; however, because the root contains alkaloids, it should be avoided by pregnant women and by individuals with liver disease. A maximum of 10 g per day is recommended, and the tea should be discontinued if any gastrointestinal upset occurs. For a stronger tincture, macerate 10 g of root in 100 ml of 70 % ethanol for 48 hours, then strain; use 1–2 ml per day diluted in water, again avoiding use during pregnancy.

Phytochemical analysis of Anemarrhena asphodeloides root has identified several alkaloids that likely underlie its traditional effects. Evodiamine and rutaecarpine are the most abundant and have been shown to possess anti‑inflammatory, antipyretic, and antimicrobial activities. In addition, the root contains polysaccharides that may contribute to its immunomodulatory properties. These constituents have been isolated in multiple peer‑reviewed studies and are consistent with the plant’s use for fever, cough, and skin conditions.

Modern research continues to explore the therapeutic potential of Anemarrhena asphodeloides. Recent in‑vitro studies demonstrate anti‑cancer activity of evodiamine, while animal models confirm its anti‑inflammatory effects. The root is still sold in herbal markets across East Asia, and its extracts are available as dietary supplements, indicating that traditional use remains vibrant and that scientific interest is growing.

Fragrance and cosmetics:
The rhizome (root) of Anemarrhena asphodeloides is harvested, dried and processed into a water‑soluble extract that is listed in the International Cosmetic Ingredient Dictionary under the INCI name “Anemarrhena Asphodeloides Root Extract”. The extract is incorporated into leave‑on and rinse‑off formulations such as creams, lotions, facial masks and shampoos. Its declared function is skin conditioning; it acts as an emollient and smoothing agent that can improve the tactile feel of cosmetic bases.

Properties relevant to use:
Phytochemical profiling shows the rhizome contains steroidal saponins (e.g., timosaponin AIII, timosaponin BII) that possess amphiphilic structures with a hydrophobic aglycone and one or more hydrophilic sugar moieties. This molecular architecture confers natural surfactant activity, providing foaming and emulsifying properties. In addition, the rhizome is rich in mucilaginous polysaccharides (β‑glucans, arabinogalactans) that are highly water‑soluble and impart a film‑forming, moisture‑retentive matrix. The total saponin content typically ranges from 1.5–3.0 % of dry weight, and the polysaccharide fraction can constitute up to 12 % of the extract, which together underpin the functional performance of the ingredient.

Standards and regulation:
The extract is officially recognised in the INCI database (Personal Care Products Council, 2023 edition) and is subject to the cosmetic regulatory frameworks of the European Union (Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009) and the United States (FDA Cosmetic Regulations). No separate monograph for this ingredient exists in pharmacopeial standards; its safety is evaluated through ingredient‑specific data packages required for cosmetic product notification.

Sustainability and sourcing:
Anemarrhena asphodeloides is cultivated on small‑holder farms in northeastern China. Rhizomes are harvested after three to five years of growth, with average yields of 0.5–1.0 t ha⁻¹. Cultivation follows rotational practices and organic amendments, and the species is not listed as threatened. Current sourcing is therefore considered sustainable with limited environmental impact.
