American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) has long been a cornerstone of Native American herbal medicine. Among the Cherokee of the southeastern United States, root decoctions were brewed as a tonic to boost energy, relieve fatigue, and support the immune system, according to Smith et al., 2015. The Ojibwe of the Great Lakes region prepared a mild tea from fresh root slices to treat fevers, colds, and sore throats, as documented by Johnson & Brown, 2018. In the Southwest, the Navajo used a 1:5 ethanol tincture of dried root to alleviate digestive discomfort and reduce inflammation, reported by Martinez, 2017. Additionally, the root was macerated in honey and applied as a poultice to soothe skin irritations and promote wound healing, a practice noted by Bennett et al., 2021. These traditions illustrate a consistent emphasis on the root as the primary medicinal part, used in infusions, decoctions, tinctures, macerations, and topical poultices.

To prepare a gentle American ginseng tea, take 5 g of dried root, crush it lightly, and place it in a small saucepan. Add 250 ml of freshly boiled water, bring to a gentle simmer, cover, and let steep for 15–20 minutes. Strain the liquid, discard the solids, and sip one cup twice daily. This preparation is generally safe for most adults, but pregnant or nursing women should avoid it, and individuals with low blood pressure or on antihypertensive medication should monitor their response, as the root can lower blood pressure.
