Paeonia lactiflora, commonly known as the Chinese white peony, has a long history of use in East Asian traditional medicine. In the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (2020) the dried root is prescribed as a decoction for menstrual pain, dysmenorrhea, and to calm the uterus; the same root is also macerated in alcohol to produce a tincture used for chronic pain and as a topical poultice for bruises and sprains. Korean herbalists, as documented in Kim et al. (2018), prepare a decoction of 10 g of the root steeped in 200 ml of water for 30 minutes to treat menstrual cramps and to relieve muscle tension.
