Prunus laurocerasus, also known as cherry laurel, is an evergreen species of cherry native to regions bordering the Black Sea in southwestern Asia and southeastern Europe. It is often used as an ornamental plant in gardens and parks, and has over 40 cultivars. However, it can also be an invasive species in some regions, out-competing and killing off native plants. The foliage is used in floristry and the fruits are edible but contain small amounts of hydrogen cyanide. The leaves and seeds are toxic if ingested. The wood of cherry laurel is creamy white and has a distinct almond smell, making it suitable for turning bowls. It is often confused with Prunus lusitanica, Portuguese laurel, which can be distinguished by its sharply toothed leaves and red petioles.
