Forsythia suspensa, known in Traditional Chinese Medicine as “Lian Qiao,” has a long history of use as an anti‑inflammatory and antipyretic remedy. Among the Han Chinese, dried fruit is boiled into a decoction to treat sore throats, coughs, and fever; the bark is similarly decocted for its cooling properties (Chinese Pharmacopoeia, 2020). In Korea, the fruit is macerated in water to produce a mild tea that is traditionally given to children with colds and to relieve nasal congestion (Kim et al., 2018). Japanese Kampo practitioners employ a tincture of the bark, diluted in alcohol, to reduce inflammation in the upper respiratory tract and to treat mild skin rashes (Japanese Pharmacopoeia, 2019). In all three cultures, the primary plant part used is the dried fruit, with occasional use of bark or leaves for more potent preparations.
A simple, safe recipe for a Lian Qiao tea is as follows: take 5 g of dried Forsythia fruit, place it in a pot with 250 ml of freshly boiled water, and let it steep for 10 minutes. Strain the liquid, allow it to cool to a comfortable temperature, and drink two cups per day. This dosage is well within the traditional range and is considered safe for most adults. Pregnant or nursing women should avoid this tea, and individuals with a history of gastrointestinal sensitivity should start with a smaller amount to assess tolerance. The tea can be sweetened with a small amount of honey if desired, but avoid adding sugar if you are managing blood glucose levels.
The therapeutic effects of Forsythia suspensa are largely attributed to a group of phenolic compounds that have been isolated from the fruit and bark. Key constituents include forsythiaside, forensin, and phillyrin, all of which exhibit anti‑inflammatory, antiviral, and antioxidant activities in laboratory studies. These lignans and flavonoids are believed to underlie the plant’s traditional use for clearing heat and resolving phlegm, as well as its modern applications in supporting immune function.
Today, Forsythia suspensa is available as a dietary supplement in the United States and European markets, often marketed for immune support and respiratory health. Ongoing research has demonstrated antiviral activity against influenza A and SARS‑CoV‑2 in vitro, and clinical trials are exploring its efficacy as an adjunct therapy for upper respiratory infections.
