The distilled water of Hamamelis virginiana is produced by macerating the twigs and leaves in ethanol and water, then distilling the mixture to yield a clear, aqueous distillate typically containing about 14–15% ethanol by volume. The product is widely used as a fragrance fixative and an astringent solvent in cosmetics and toiletries such as toners, cleansers, and shaving lotions; commercial preparations are often labeled as “witch hazel.” The twig and leaf extract is also employed as a fragrance component and fixative, while bark extracts serve as tanning materials and natural brown dyes for protein fibers.

Fragrance and cosmetics:
Witch-hazel distillate functions primarily as a fragrance fixative and a low‑tannin astringent solvent; its light floral–herbal note is used to scent personal‑care formulations. Commercial fragrance norms may use limited residual ethanol content to maintain microbial stability.

Industrial and craft applications:
Dried leaves and bark are used as vegetable tanning materials and as natural brown dyes for wool and other protein fibers. The astringency derives from hydrolysable tannins, which mordant protein fibers and form stable complexes with collagen and gelatin, giving brown hues and improving leather handle.

Colorants and tanning:
Tanning activities rely on hydrolysable tannins that chelate and precipitate proteins, thereby stabilizing collagen fibers in hides and increasing leather shrinkage temperature. In dyeing, the same tannin class produces brown coloration on protein fibers and can be used as a mordant to improve dye uptake.

Wood and fiber:
Although the shrub is not primarily a timber species, it is sometimes employed as a decorative specialty wood for small turning and carving projects.

Properties relevant to use:
Hydrolysable tannins (notably gallotannins) provide high affinity to proteins and metals, enabling both tanning and natural dyeing. The distillate’s low tannin content, combined with ethanol and characteristic aroma, supports use as a fragrance fixative and solvent in cosmetics.

Standards and regulation:
In the United States, witch-hazel distillate is defined and labeled under the USP–NF, with a specified ethanol range (14–15% by volume) to meet identity and safety standards for cosmetic and toiletry applications. No separate ISO/ASTM/EN standards are commonly applied.

Sustainability and sourcing:
Commercial supplies are sourced from sustainably managed wild stands in the eastern United States. Although the species regenerates by root suckers, long-term harvesting should follow regional regulations and best‑practice guidelines to maintain population viability.
