Hamamelis virginiana, also known as witch-hazel, is a flowering shrub native to eastern North America. It can grow up to 6 meters tall and has light brown bark and oval leaves. The flowers are pale yellow and bloom in the fall, while the fruit is a hard woody capsule that explodes to release seeds. This plant is important for pollinators and has been used by Native Americans for medicinal purposes, particularly for treating inflammations. Its extract is also used in astringents and has shown potential for treating colon cancer. The wood of witch-hazel is used for divining rods.
