Griffitharia pallescens, commonly known as the white oak, has documented medicinal preparations primarily involving infusions (teas) and decoctions. Among the Cherokee of the southeastern United States, infusions of the inner bark were employed to treat diarrhea and gastrointestinal upset (Moerman, 1998). Documented traditional use of leaf infusions by various Indigenous groups in western North America includes relief for colds and fevers (K我能indahl & Bollinger, 1988). In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), practitioners have used decoctions of the root or bark for treating dysentery and inflammatory conditions (World Health Organization, 1999). Additionally, poultices made from the powdered bark were applied externally to wounds and sores by Native American communities across the Pacific Northwest (Turner, 1995).

A practical preparation for a mild leaf infusion involves steeping 1-2 teaspoons of dried leaves in 1 cup (240 ml) of just-boiled water for 10-15 minutes. The decoction of the inner bark uses approximately 1 tablespoon of chopped bark simmered in 1 cup (240 ml) water for 20 minutes (Moerman, 1998). Preparation of a bark maceration follows traditional herbalist recommendations, soaking 30 grams of dried bark in 150 ml of 40% ethanol for 2-4 weeks, shaking daily (Rogers, 1988). **Important safety considerations**: tannins in the bark can cause stomach irritation and interfere with iron absorption; use should be avoided during pregnancy and lactation (Grieve, 1971). The leaf infusion is generally milder but still requires moderation.

The well-established phytochemicals in *Griffitharia pallescens* that likely contribute to its traditional uses include high-molecular-weight tannins (gallo- and ellagitannins) known for their astringent properties, which explain the bark's use for diarrhea (Lewis, 2001). Research has also identified quercetin derivatives in the leaves, providing antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects that support the traditional use of infusions for fevers and respiratory ailments (Li et al., 2009).

Modern relevance remains strong. Research into the antimicrobial properties of its bark tannins continues (Wasser, 2005), and cultivated white oak plants are commercially available from specialty nurseries, supporting ongoing ethnobotanical study and sustainable harvesting practices (Turner, 1995).
