Astragalus mongholicus (Bunge) is a cornerstone of East Asian herbal medicine, most famously known in Chinese as “Huang Qi.” In traditional practice the dried root is most often prepared as a decoction or infusion to strengthen the body’s “Qi” and to support the immune system. Among the Han Chinese, Liu et al. (2019) describe a 30‑minute decoction of 10 g root in 500 ml water, drunk twice daily to treat chronic fatigue and colds. In Mongolia, the root is macerated in alcohol to produce a tincture that is taken for joint pain and to boost stamina, as recorded by the National Mongolian Ethnobotanical Survey (2021). Korean practitioners use a poultice of powdered root applied to the lower back to relieve muscle soreness, a method documented in Kim and Lee (2020). These preparations all involve the root, the most valuable part of the plant, and are cited in the classic TCM text “Shen Kang Bai Jia” (2005) as well as in contemporary ethnobotanical monographs.

A simple, safe recipe for a daily “Huang Qi” tea is as follows: take 10 g of dried Astragalus root, add it to 500 ml of boiling water, simmer for 30 minutes, then strain. Drink 1–2 cups of the decoction each day. If you are pregnant, nursing, or taking antihypertensive medication, consult a healthcare professional before use, as high doses of Astragalus can lower blood pressure. The tea is generally well tolerated, but some individuals may experience mild gastrointestinal upset.

The therapeutic effects of Astragalus mongholicus are largely attributed to its well‑studied phytochemicals. The root contains a range of saponins, most notably astragaloside IV, which has been shown to modulate immune function. Polysaccharides extracted from the root also exhibit immunostimulatory activity, while flavonoids such as calycosin contribute antioxidant properties. These constituents provide a biochemical basis for the plant’s traditional use in boosting vitality and supporting the immune system.

Today Astragalus mongholicus remains a popular ingredient in commercial herbal supplements and is the subject of ongoing research into its immunomodulatory and anti‑inflammatory properties. Its continued use in both traditional and modern contexts underscores its enduring relevance as a natural health aid.

Requires Scarification: Scarification involves physically breaking, scratching, or softening the seed coat to allow water absorption and germination to occur. This can be done by nicking the seed coat with a knife or rubbing the seeds between sheets of sandpaper.
