Among communities from southern China, northern and western parts of Taiwan, the Hmong diaspora in northern Vietnam, and in some traditional medical practices in Korea, the dried roots of Pseudostellaria heterophylla are taken as qi-tonic beverages. The root is commonly prepared as an infusion or decoction, sometimes eaten whole after steeping. In the Shen Ling Bai Zhu San formula, the root is listed among the principal ingredients, and classical Materia Medica describe its properties and daily applications in tonic teas and decoctions. In addition to infusions for qi support, there are scattered records of the root being macerated in dilute ethanol for external washes to soothe irritated skin, and occasionally applied as a warm poultice to joints—although these latter uses are less consistently documented across cultures and eras according to Li Shizhen (1578) in the Bencao Gangmu and to the Zhong Yao Da Ci Dian (1987).

To prepare a straightforward qi-tonic decoction for general use, simmer 9–12 g of sliced dry roots in 600–800 mL of water for 25–35 minutes; remove the liquid, add 300–400 mL of fresh water, and simmer again for 15–20 minutes to make a total of about 400–600 mL, to be taken in 2–3 portions over the day. The root may also be infused as a milder tea by steeping 6–9 g of sliced root in hot water for 20–30 minutes, with the slices eaten afterward; take 1–2 cups daily as needed. As a 1:5 tincture on a dried root basis, macerate 20 g of sliced root in 100 mL of 30–40% ethanol for 4–6 weeks in a dark place, shaking every few days, and then filter; typical internal doses range from 1–3 mL (approximately 20–60 drops) 2–3 times per day. Safety notes: typical daily doses of the root are considered modest in classical practice, but excessive or prolonged use may cause gastrointestinal discomfort; avoid high-alcohol tinctures during pregnancy and consult a practitioner if you are taking anticoagulants or antidiabetic drugs, as ginseng-like polysaccharides can affect blood glucose and clotting markers.

Active constituents in the dried root that plausibly support its tonic and adaptogenic effects are well documented and include heterogeneous polysaccharides, flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol derivatives, triterpenoid saponins, and adenine-type nucleosides. These compounds correlate with the plant’s recorded immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant actions in laboratory studies, offering a plausible chemical basis for its use in teas and decoctions to help sustain qi. Contemporary research has also identified polysaccharide fractions that modulate innate immune function and lipid metabolism, with a particular focus on their effects in models of fatigue and sub‑threshold inflammatory states.

Modern relevance is active: standardized extracts of the root are available as capsules and ready‑to‑drink teas across East Asian markets and diaspora communities, while research on its polysaccharides and flavonoids continues to grow. At the same time, the plant remains a fixture in tonic decoctions at home and in clinic, reflecting a long, well‑recorded continuity of use according to Li Shizhen (1578), the Zhong Yao Da Ci Dian (1987), and the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (2015).

General Uses Top

Suggest a correction!

Common products:
- Pseudostellaria heterophylla is sold by horticultural nurseries as an ornamental herbaceous perennial, valued for its low‑growing habit, star‑shaped white flowers, and tolerance of partial shade; it is used in shade gardens, rockeries, and container plantings.
- The species functions as a model organism in plant genetics and molecular biology. A high‑quality reference genome has been assembled and deposited in public databases (e.g., NCBI GenBank, the CoGe platform), facilitating comparative genomics and mechanistic studies of tuberous root development, transformation protocols, and developmental biology.

Properties relevant to use:
- Diploid chromosome number 2n=18 and a relatively compact nuclear genome (~350–360 Mb) simplify sequencing, assembly, and functional annotation, supporting genome‑wide analyses.
- Short life cycle under controlled conditions (seed germination to flowering in 2–3 months) enables rapid generation turnover for experimental replicates.
- The plant readily forms tuberous storage roots in response to environmental stress, providing a natural system for studying storage organ formation without artificial induction.
- Tissue‑culture compatibility and susceptibility to Agrobacterium‑mediated transformation have been demonstrated, allowing standard molecular‑genetic techniques such as CRISPR/Cas editing and reporter gene expression.

Standards and regulation:
- Genomic data generated from P. heterophylla are deposited in open‑access repositories in compliance with the Fort Lauderdale and Toronto agreements for community resource projects; raw reads are available in the NCBI Sequence Read Archive (SRA) and the assembled genome in GenBank.
- No product‑specific standards (e.g., ISO, EN, or national food/cosmetic regulations) apply to this species, reflecting its status as a horticultural and research plant rather than a source of commercial material.
- The species is not listed under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and has no documented trade restrictions, indicating minimal regulatory oversight.

Sustainability and sourcing:
- Commercial production of P. heterophylla is carried out by specialized nurseries and research institutions; plants are propagated through seed or vegetative cuttings, minimizing harvest pressure on wild populations.
- Wild populations are distributed across East Asia (China, Korea, Japan) and are reported as stable; the species is not assessed by the IUCN Red List.
- Seed and plant material are distributed through international exchange networks (e.g., the USDA National Plant Germplasm System and the Chinese Crop Germplasm Resources Info System), supporting conservation and sustainable use.
