In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the dried seeds of *Illicium verum* (star anise) are boiled to make a decoction that is used to treat coughs, phlegm, and abdominal pain; the same preparation is cited by Li et al., 2015 as a remedy for digestive upset. Among the Korean traditional medicine practitioners, a tea made from the seeds is brewed to relieve colds and sore throats, as documented by Kim et al., 2018. Vietnamese folk healers also prepare a mild infusion of the seeds to soothe stomach cramps and to aid digestion, a practice noted in Nguyen and Tran, 2017. In each case the seed is the primary plant part used, and the method involves either a decoction (boiling) or an infusion (steeping in hot water).
A simple, safe recipe for a star anise tea is as follows: take 3–5 dried seeds (about 1–2 g) and add them to 250 ml of boiling water. Let the mixture steep for 10 minutes, then strain and sip. This yields a fragrant, mildly sweet tea that can be taken up to three times a day. Because star anise contains anethole, a compound that can be hepatotoxic in large amounts, it is advisable to limit intake to the amount above and to avoid the tea during pregnancy or if you have liver disease. A 1:5 ethanol tincture (1 g of seeds in 5 ml of 95 % ethanol) can be prepared for a more concentrated dose, but should be used sparingly and only under professional guidance.
The therapeutic effects of star anise are largely attributed to its well‑established phytochemicals.
